Consultation draft reveals future shape of the industry.
The Council of Consumer Affairs Officials of Australia and New Zealand has today released the Travel Industry Transition Plan Consultation Draft for stakeholder comment.
Five key recommendations are outlined including the winding up of the Travel Compensation Fund and the repealing of Travel Agents Legislation, along with new arrangements which would underpin future regulation including a greater reliance on generic consumer protection legislation, an alignment with tourism policy and the possible introduction of voluntary industry accreditation.
A range of questions are posed, and AFTA ceo Jayson Westbury said the Federation would once again commission expert advice from KPMG to assist in preparing a detailed and specific industry response to the draft transition plan.
“The Ministers and the bureaucracy within the consumer affairs portfolios across the country should be congratulated for bringing this document together,” he said.
“After what has been the best part of four years of review we finally have a clear plan for how the travel industry can make a tranistion from the current expensive and over burdensome national scheme to a more future proof and appropriate framework for the regulation of travel agents,” Westbury added.
