SKYTEAM welcomed China Airlines as the 15th member of its global airline alliance at a function in Sydney last night after a rigorous audit before it met entry requirements. The Taipei-based carrier operates four weekly A330 services ex-SYD to Taipei, moving to 5 next month, plus 3 weekly flights ex- BNE and also ex-BNE to AKL. SkyTeam now has a total of 6 online carriers in the Australian market which will increase to 8 by June next year. “We applied for membership 4 years ago after seeing the many benefits of being in SkyTeam, and we had to work very hard to meet strict rules before we were finally admitted,” said S.C. Hsieh, China Airlines General Manager Australia & New Zealand. The Australian SkyTeam coordinator, Rafael Despradel who is also the Sales & Marketing Manager for Korean Air in Aust. said the newest member heralded an exciting time for the alliance. “The inclusion of China Airlines into our network will solidify SkyTeams unrivalled presence in the Greater China market, as well as enlarging the sharing of resources and giving travellers greater access to more destinations around the world,” said Despradel.
