THREE million young Aussies are intending to travel over the next 3-4 years and they are choosing travel that expands their lifestyles,
according to findings in Contiki’s new Style Miles research.
Food, Music, Art and Fashion are key pillars in decision making when it comes to picking a destination for the 18 -35 year old market, Contiki md Fiona Hunt said last night.
The study showed that food is the main influence for the tour operators target market with 97% of its travellers “seeking local food” to “immerse themselves into a destination.”
When travellers return from their holidays they “are changing their behaviours….and seeking out restaurants” with food that “they experienced while overseas”, Hunt said.
Some youngsters are even going as far as to change their long term dietary habits upon their return, she added.
Music was the draw card for 77% of people with Festivals, local bands and visiting places like Graceland and Liverpool, England to be closer to where Elvis and the Beetles came from.
Travellers became more curious in culture and art while abroad, with 59% saying they would go in search of it at home, but 74% would seek it out when overseas.
Fashion was another suprising factor with the youth market seeking out “niche pieces” to bring back home, with a third of the 87% who hit the shops overseas continuing to alter their fashion style due to what they saw on the streets while abroad.
The study also gives a snapshot of what the market’s plans for travel over the next few years are.
The report suggests that 2.5m people expect to travel domestically and 34% (848,000) are already saving for this trip.
52% of are planning a number of foreign trips, with 50% saying they will explore multiple countries on a single continent and 41% expecting to travel around a single country.
MEANWHILE, the majority (66%) of travellers said they preferred to have customised elements (sightseeing, culture and adventure) of their trip.
53% said they preferred a combination of tailor-made and independant travel.
