South African Airways and African hotel chain, Sun International, along with Greenmount Press/Travel recently sponsored a race night at Toowoomba’s Clifford Park Racecourse. The evening, organised by Greenmount Director Lloyd O’Connell, was a fund raiser for Downlands College in Toowoomba.
The evening was attended by 270 people who were treated to a 3 course meal and entertained trackside in an African-themed marquee featuring African drummers, the vocal talents of Downlands’ students and a local band. Guinea pig races and Fashions on the Field rounded out a jam-packed evening of entertainment.
There was even an exclusive marquee bookie to take bets on the feature event – The South African Airways/Downlands Handicap for 2 year-olds which was won by impressive gelding Slysera, getting home over the favourite, Golden Trinkets.
The main prize on the night was a trip for two to Victoria Falls (donated by South African Airways) and a 7 Night accommodation package provided by Sun International at their selected 5 Star hotels – The Royal Livingstone in Zambia, The Palace at Sun City and The Table Bay Hotel In Cape Town. Over 3500 Tickets were sold which helped the event raise $30,000 for Downlands College.
