The Austrian National Tourist Office yesterday kicked off its inaugural destination summit in Vienna, with 29 Austrian suppliers presenting their products to 60 Australian/North American travel agents (p1).
The summit is the next phase of the Austrian Tourism Academy’s development, and gives preferred agents the chance to interact with the suppliers they are likely to deal with directly, and to build business ties and dialogue.
Australia/New Zealand director Astrid Mullholland-Licht told TD that ANTO’s soon to launch online training tool will provide every agent with the information they require to confidently sell Austria.
The course features destination modules relevant to the Aussie market, and aims to make it easier for more local agents to become accredited Austria sellers.

Agents participating in the Austrian National Tourism Board’s destination summit were treated to some Viennese ‘ must- see’ attractions on a half day walking tour of the city yesterday.
During the tour delegates had a chance to listen in on the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as they rehearsed, saw the stallions in training at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, learnt the Viennese Waltz at the Elmayer Dance School and sampled sweet delights and coffee at a typically fabulous Viennese coffeehouse.
There was also time for site inspections at three iconic hotels, The Imperial Palace, The Ring Hotel and Hotel Sacher.
Agents then had free time to explore the Austrian capital at their leisure, with many heading to the Christmas Markets which have just launched this week.

Agents participating in this week’s Austria. Destination Summit immersed themselves in history while in Graz overnight.
The group spent time at the spectacular Landeszeughaus – an interactive display of over 32,000 pieces of armour and weaponry used in bloody battles between the 1450s and 1850s.
Billed as the world’s biggest collection of armour, the priceless exhibition features an array of weapons and shields from the Baroque and Renaissance period, including muskets, pistols, cannons, armour, bayonets, cannon balls, gun powder cases, swords and much more.
Agents told TD they were blown away by the showcase, and would definitely recommend it as a “must-see” to clients.
