Sydney, 1 August 2013 – The German National Tourist Office, in partnership with the Magic Cities and Emirates, held its Destination Germany Roadshow in Australia last month. The week saw successful trivia nights held for almost 300 travel industry professionals in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as a media cocktail event in Sydney.
The purpose of the roadshow was to educate industry on Germany‘s fascinating watercolour blend of history and culture, and the diversity of experiences available for travellers to Germany. Travel agents, tour operator staff and key airline sales representatives attended the trivia nights, which were themed “Fairytale Moments in Germany” in honour of the 200th Anniversary of the famous German fairytales of the Brothers Grimm. These fairytales were brought to life on each table, whose members competed in trivia rounds and individual challenges, under team names including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. Dorothea Niestert, Managing Director of the marketing alliance Magic Cities Germany, representing the cities of Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hannover, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart, said: “Magic Cities was proud to be a major partner for this year’s Destination Germany roadshow. These events help to educate industry professionals on the diversity of products and experiences available in Germany, understand the key players and suppliers, as well as build their confidence in selling the destination.” The media event was held in Sydney and was attended by key Australian media that included television producers, magazine and major metropolitan newspaper journalists, as well as travel industry and freelance journalists. German Consul General Hans-Dieter Steinbach welcomed the group, and the media enjoyed presentations from Magic Cities and Emirates. Significant growth from Australia in 2013 Australian travel to Germany has increased in the last 12 months, according to the German Federal Bureau of Statistics. The Bureau recorded a rise of 10.6% for booked room nights in accommodation options with 10 or more beds by Australians in April this year, compared to the same month in 2012. For the period between January and April, overnight bookings were at 139,227, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2012. Berlin remains the most popular city to visit for Australians, with 12,972 overnight stays – a growth of 13.2% since April last year. The popularity of Munich and Cologne is also growing significantly, with rises of 30.9% and 20.1% respectively. |
