Happy ‘Lei Day’! New Brisbane travel agency The Village Travel in Ascot had a special visit from Hawaiian Airlines and Viva Holidays this week to help celebrate the agency’s recent opening. Owner of the agency Craig Andrew Reid and team were presented with Hawaiian Kukui Nut Leis flown in specially from Honolulu for Lei Day. Known as May Day in other parts of the world, 1 May is celebrated as ‘Lei Day’ in Hawai’i. Lei Day became an official holiday in Hawai’i in 1929, which also happens to be the same year Hawaiian Airlines was founded and its inaugural flight took off from Honolulu.
The day celebrates the tradition of lei making, giving and wearing. A humble, yet meaningful gift, the lei has become a symbol of Hawai’i and its native traditions of hospitality recognised around the world. Gifting lei carries a deep and special meaning in Hawai’i, where they are given with love, friendship, respect or appreciation.
The Kukui Nut Lei is extremely special, once worn only by royalty and hand made from Hawaii’s state tree.
