Restrictions to now continue until 17th February 2022.
Health Minister Greg Hunt has just announced an extension of the human biosecurity emergency period under the Biosecurity Act 2015. The arrangements, which have been in place since 18 March 2020, will now continue until 17 February next year, with Hunt saying the move was “informed by specialist medical and epidemiological advice provided by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and the Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer.
“Continuation of these arrangements will allow the important measures currently in place to continue as the Government continues to reopen Australia and act decisively to respond to the emergence of the Omicron variant,” Hunt said.
The move means the four existing emergency requirement Determinations will remain in force, with the ability to be revoked earlier depending on medical advice. These include mandatory pre-departure testing and mask wearing for international flights, restrictions on international travel from high risk countries, restrictions on outbound international travel for unvaccinated Australians, and restrictions on the entry of cruise vessels into Australian territory.
Hunt said the ban on cruising would be reviewed on a monthly basis, saying the Government continued to “work constructively with the cruise ship industry…to enable a phased resumption of cruising in Australia on the basis of medical advice”.
