No appeal by Transport Workers Union to Fair Work termination.
Qantas says that confirmation by the TWU that it will not launch an appeal or stay against the decision three weeks ago by Fair Work Australia to terminate all industrial action, means that customers can book flights with certainty because there will be no strikes by the unions representing pilots, licensed engineers and ground handlers for as far out as 2015.
The union’s decision not to appeal means that the new workplace agreements with all three unions will be detemined by Fair Work Australia, which will today hold directions hearings for arbitration between the carrier and the TWU as well as separately with the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association. A date has not yet been set for a directions hearing for arbitration between Qantas and the Australian and International Pilots Association.
QF spokesperson Olivia Wirth said the Fair Work Australia ruling means the unions are unable to take industrial action for the upcoming period of arbitration as well as for the period of the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement determined by FWA “which could be up to four years”.
