AirAsia X suspends Kuala Lumpur-Christchurch direct flights.
Malaysian low-cost long haul carrier AirAsia X has just confirmed the suspension of its flights between Kuala Lumpur and Christchurch.
The move, which has been rumoured for some time, has been described as a “realignment” of the AirAsia X network to focus on core markets,” and follows the recent suspension of the airline’s flights to London and Paris as well as India.
The current four times per week flight to Christchurch will be suspended effective from the 31 May departure ex CHC, with AirAsia X offering guests holding bookings after those dates the option of a full refund or a reroute to another AirAsia X destination at no cost.
CEO Azran Osman-Rani said the decision had been difficult, but was made taking into account “our strategic focus in consolidating our network on markets where we have built up stable, profitable routes”.
He said that while the CHC flights had recorded close to 80% load factors, the route had been impacted by the spiraling cost of jet fuel.
“We have been very grateful for the huge support rendered by Christchurch Airport, Christchurch City Council and Tourism New Zealand, and would like to put on record our appreciation for all the cooperation that has been given to us,” Osman-Rani added..
