Accor’s Ibis Melbourne hotel were proud to host seven members of the Indigenous Marathon Project team as they participated in a 10 kilometre training run during the Melbourne Marathon ahead of the world’s most famous foot race – The New York City Marathon.
At a recent camp in Alice Springs, the 11 member team consisting of four women and seven men were chosen to run in the New York Marathon this November.
The Indigenous Marathon Project uses the marathon and running to change lives. It provides an opportunity for young Indigenous men and women to become healthy lifestyle leaders within their communities and inspire their family, friends and community to lead an active, healthy life.
Accor Regional General Manager Victoria & Tasmania, Scott Boyes, says “Accor is committed to the employment and development of Indigenous Australians since the launch of our Indigenous Employment Program in 2001. Accor hotels across the country, including Ibis Melbourne, are proud to play a role in assisting young Indigenous Australians to excel in the tourism field and be showcased to the world”.
Each marathon runner will also complete a Certificate III in Community Recreation with a focus on Indigenous Healthy Lifestyle. The certificate will equip the team to gain employment and deliver or participate in local community based health initiatives to help reduce chronic disease and social dysfunction.
The ABC TV documentary ‘Running to America’ which followed the Indigenous Marathon Project last year will go to air coinciding with the New York City Marathon in just five weeks. The documentary is an amazing story of struggle and achievement for four Indigenous Australians who crossed the finish line.
