AIRASIA X ceo Azran Osman-Rani has revealed the low cost carrier is planning to boost frequencies to Sydney, even before its new daily services take off in less than 80 days (TD breaking news).
The Malaysian carrier confirmed today it would finally launch long touted services to Sydney (TD 20 Aug 2008) from 02 Apr 2012, subject to government approval.
Osman-Rani said getting approval from the Malay govt has been “something we’ve pushed very hard for” and comes four years after the budget airline commenced flights to its maiden Aussie gateway, the Gold Coast.
Osman-Rani said AirAsia’s new service would provide budget concious Sydneysiders greater access to South-East Asia, now the carrier has delinked long-haul flights to Europe & India (TD Fri).
D7’s business model had shown “it works” and allowed it to “pick countries and focus on those where we can fly into multiple cities with multiple frequencies, rather than spreading ourselves to thin”, he said, adding that he’s already in talks with Sydney Airport for “future expansion” as soon as aircraft become available.
