Bali’s Big Eco Weekend wrapped up yesterday following an all-inclusive action packed agenda attracting over 10,000 tourists and local participants who were involved in the exciting three day schedule.
Friday, 1 July officially opened the weekend with Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika who rang a Balinese gong and had high hopes for the success of the weekend.
“As the governor and on behalf of the Balinese people I’m very pleased to see Coca-Cola Amatil, Quiksilver and the others making these efforts to save the environment. This effort will be useful to the Balinese and for the tourists also, as well as for the planet. I’m sure that through this event, many people will learn how to keep the beaches clean and their environment healthier. You have my high appreciation for taking action and for caring for Bali…congratulations and I support your actions.”
Day two, Saturday 2 July opened with 100 plus Balawista lifeguards compete in the gruelling Lifesaver race with Supriadi winning the title.
The King of the Groms under 16 surfing competition welcomed 78 participants who took part in the three round battle, with the final on Sunday awarding 14-year-old Andre Julian a trip to France to compete in the International King of the Groms competition.
Saturday and Sunday afternoon saw the much anticipated turtle release from the Turtle Conservatory built by CCA Indonesia and Quiksilver on Kuta Beach, where hundreds of baby turtles are nurtured and protected from predators. Surfing legends Mark Richards, Martin Potter, and Jake Paterson joined a crowd of 1,000 onlookers and participants in the release of 300 baby turtles safely into their natural environment in the sea.
The most significant eco-activity was the beach clean-up on Sunday morning. Approximately 2,000 participants and Coke trucks removed 169,679kgs of rubbish collected off Jimbaran, Kedonganan, Kuta and Legian beach.
Australian surfing legends Tom Carroll, Jake Paterson, Mark Richards, Martin Potter and Cheyne Horan compete and won against Indonesia’s best talent Sandi Slamet, Made Darmayasa, Komo, and Rio. Last place fell to the Local team of Bali locals Ketut Menda, Tipi Jabrik and Dede Suryana in a tough battle.
