Inspiring Journeys creates partnership to save the Tassie Devils
Experiential small group operator, Inspiring Journeys (www.inspiringjourneys.com.au), is creating even more incredible stories by establishing a
long-term partnership with Tasmania Zoo to support the survival of endangered Tasmanian Devils.
Sponsoring the Tasmania Zoo Devil Conservation and Breeding Program – Devil’s Heaven, Inspiring Journeys is contributing to the Devils’ ongoing protection against the devastating Devil Facial Tumour Disease.
Inspiring Journeys is supporting the initiative by funding a holding and breeding enclosure dedicated to all aspects of interpretation, holding and breeding of the species at Tasmania Zoo, Launceston.
Tammy Marshall, Managing Director, Inspiring Journeys said, “Inspiring Journeys is committed to supporting the zoo in its endeavors to protect this unique creature from extinction. The Tassie devil is an internationally recognised native Australian and we are dedicated to ensuring its survival for future generations.
“As well as funding the Devil Heaven Breeding Program, education and awareness of the plight to save the Tassie Devil is also vital to the ongoing survival of the species.
“Inspiring Journeys travellers on The Forgotten Coast 11-day Tasmania journey now visit the Zoo’s Tasmanian Devils. When there, they learn about the Devil’s Heaven Breeding Program as well as about the life cycles of Tasmanian Devils, history and the Devil Facial Tumor Disease.
The Tasmanian devil is facing major threats with the Devil Facial Tumour Disease and is now listed as endangered. Results of recent research shows that in some areas, more than 90 per cent of the Tasmanian Devil population has been wiped out and that is why breeding programs like the one at Tasmania Zoo are crucial to protect the species from extinction.
Tasmania Zoo credits itself as having one of the largest and most successful devil breeding program in Tasmania. Boasting a 100 per cent success rate in 2009, 2010 and 2011, the zoo successfully bred 20 devils, and now cares for more than 50 devils on site, with the aim to have 500 by 2020.
