The Queensland travel industry have come together to do their part for the flood affected town of Grantham, after the devastating events which unfolded on January 10th 2011 when flash flooding ripped through the town, destroying houses, and devastating whole communities. Travelscene American Express State Manager for Queensland, Kim Tomlinson was part of a small committee, consisting of individuals from the Queensland travel industry who came up with the Golf for Grantham appeal to raise funds for rebuilding the town. The fantastic idea to raise money for Grantham with the Golf Day was started by Sharon Hando, State Manager QLD Travel the World, while other members of the committee included Danny Roche – State Manager QLD Jetset Travelworld and Peter Balmer – State Sales Manager QLD Australian Pacific Tours. “After we were moved by the overwhelming events which occurred on January 10th, like most Queenslanders we wanted to do something to help, so we came up with the idea of holding a golf day at Carbrook Golf Club where we raised an unbelievable $56,001” said Kim Tomlinson “With the support of the Golf Club and General Manager, Scott Wagstaff and All Crowd Catering whose staff donated their time and all the Catering the day, the event was a huge success and was bigger than we ever could have imagined. “In fact, the event was a sell out and we fielded a maximum of 144 players with every hole sponsored. We raised over $9,000 in raffles alone, thanks to the overwhelming support of the QLD travel industry which donated $40,000 worth of prizes! “The committee would also like to express its gratitude for the support of all the companies who helped make this event such a success including Pacific Korean Air, Cruising Downunder and Carbrook Golf Club” said Kim After the cheque of $56,001 was presented to local Councillor for the Lockyer Valley region, Tanya Milligan, the committee drove to Grantham to see the recovery process and witnessed the scarred little town still at present. “It’s devastating to see how damaged the community still is today, but it was good to visit the community centre and see the plans for re building the town first hand” said Kim.
