NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality and Racing; Minister for the Arts, the Hon. George Souris MP last night joined 80 guests to mark the 40th anniversary of travel and tourism education at TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute.
Institute Director, David Riordan said he was proud of the role it played in producing job ready graduates and tailoring training solutions for businesses.
“Sydney Institute, Ultimo College is the home of the longest serving travel and tourism training provider in Australia,” Mr Riordan said.
“Currently, there are approximately 700 students completing courses in retail travel, wholesale tourism, guiding and management.
“Our graduates have played an integral role in the growth of the industry over the last four decades, and will continue to ensure the sector meets future challenges and seizes opportunities presented by the digital revolution.”
A new training package to be introduced after July will allow Sydney Institute to offer travel and tourism e-business and e-marketing training in its higher-level courses.
“New skills are essential, however we haven’t lost sight of critical core skills sets required by business, industry and government to meet the demands of customers,” Mr Riordan said.
In recognition of Sydney Institute’s strong partnerships with the sector, seven businesses and iconic destinations were named the first Travel and Tourism Industry Champions, including:
• Sydney Opera House.
• Captain Cook Cruises and Sealink.
• The Travel Corporation.
• DriveAway Holidays.
• Helen Wong’s Tours.
• Novotel – Sydney Central.
• The City of Sydney.
Keynote speaker and alumni member, Joint Managing Director of Travel the World, Mr Justin Montgomery paid tribute to the value of his TAFE training.
Mr Montgomery said the skills he had been equipped with were transportable, across the industry and globally, and had taken him from the classroom to high-level positions at some of the country’s leading tourism and travel operators, including Virgin Australia. |
