Malaysia-based low-cost long-haul carrier AirAsia X has just confirmed the details of its new route between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney, with daily operations to commence 02 Apr 2012.
Announced at an event in Sydney, launch fares lead in at just $99 one way in economy class and $499 in the premium cabin.
CEO Azran Osman-Rani was joined by Destination NSW ceo Sandra Chipchase at the announcment, with Osman-Rani saying the additional destination was “a culmination of a dream of everyone involved with AirAsia X, in particular our group ceo, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
“We are finally here and we are here to offer Sydneysiders the opportunity to experience the AirAsia brand and its extensive network across Asia and beyond,” Osman-Rani said.
He said that passengers would also be able to book ‘fly-thru’ flights from Sydney to destinations such as Bali from $159, Bangkok from $149, Phuket from $139, Singapore from $139 and Ho Chi Minh City from $149, with special deals on offer for online bookings at airasia.com from 2pm today until 22 Jan, for travel 02 Apr-28 Oct 2012.
AirAsia Group ceo Tony Fernandes said the new route is also good news for Sydney tourism.
“The city has also been a priority for AirAsia X due to the high demand for direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney,” he said.
And Destination NSW ceo Sandra Chipchase confirmed that the organisation together with Sydney Airport and Tourism Australia would partner with AirAsia X in a two year marketing and promotion plan for the new route.
“We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with AirAsia X to increase visitation from some of our key international markets,” she said.
