NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell has just announced that Sydney will be the first international route for the fledgling Singapore Airlines-owned long-haul budget operation, Scoot.
From mid-2012 Scoot will operate daily flights between Sydney and Singapore “giving Australians cheap fares for holiday destinations in Asia.
“This is a great win for Sydney and travellers in the Asia-Pacific region, opening up Australia’s largest city to more international routes and lower-cost carriers,” he said, with the move estimated to inject $146m into the NSW economy annually.
And NSW Tourism Minister, George Souris, said Scoot had chosen Sydney “ahead of strong competition from Victoria and Queensland”.
Destination NSW ceo Sandra Chipchase said DNSW plus Sydney Airport, Tourism Australia and Scoot would invest in a two year marketing and promotion plan for the new route, with Scoot the first airline to come to Sydney under the new partnership between Sydney Airport and DNSW.
