Relief measures aim to help carriers stay afloat.
The Federal Government has just confirmed it will waive Airservices charges, security levies and jet fuel excise, in a $715 million package aiming to assist local airlines reeling from the coronavirus crisis.
Initial payments will amount to almost $160 million, with the Government reimbursing fees paid by domestic carriers since the beginning of last month.
Earlier this evening the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also issued a new general update, recommending that Australians who are currently overseas and wish to return should do so by commercial means as soon as possible.
“As more countries close their borders or introduce travel restrictions, overseas travel is becoming more complex and difficult…you may not be able to return to Australia when you had planned to,” DFAT said.
“Consider whether you have access to health care and support systems if you get sick while overseas. If you decide to return to Australia do so as soon as possible. Commercial options may become less available,” the update advised.
