Carrier avoids potential $120 million penalty.
Qantas has been fined $90 million for illegally sacking workers during the pandemic, and while the penalty is hefty, it is shy of the maximum $120 million sought by the Transport Workers Union (TWU).
The Federal Court’s Justice Michael Lee said $50 million of the penalty should be paid directly to the TWU, with the fine ordered in addition to compensation Qantas is required to pay affected employees.
