Tiger Airways to operate 3 aircraft from new Sydney base.
Tiger Airways has this morning confirmed an expansion of its current operations in Australia, with three aircraft to be based in Sydney from later this year.
In a media conference at Sydney Airport the carrier said the move followed approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to progressively lift daily sectors flown from the current level of 38 to 64 by October this year.
Tiger will increase its return services ex SYD from nine to 19 per day, with the boost including more Melbourne-Sydney flights and four new daily return services from Sydney to both Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
CEO Andrew David said the increase would see Tiger back to the levels of flying prior to last year’s CASA grounding of the carrier.
Tiger currently has ten aircraft in Australia, and all of these will be back in the air once the new schedules are implemented, and David also confirmed the addition of an eleventh aircraft to the local fleet as an “operational spare” in order to ensure it maintains its improved on-time performance.
Sydney Airport ceo Kerrie Mather said the new Tiger base would cement Sydney’s status as “Australia’s number one destination”.
The move will create up to 150 new jobs in Sydney.
