US president imposes 30 day ban on arrivals from Europe.
American president Donald Trump has just announced the suspension of all travel to the USA from Europe.
The UK is exempt from the new restrictions, which will become effective at midnight Washington time this Friday night.
In an address to the nation, he said “I have decided to take several strong but necessary actions to protect the health and well-being of all Americans…to keep new cases from entering our shores we will be suspending all travel to the United States from Europe for the next 30 days”.
He said the travel suspension would be “adjusted subject to conditions on the ground,” and that there would be some exemptions for US citizens who have undergone appropriate screenings.
Trump also said his administration was closely monitoring the coronavirus situation in China and South Korea, with a view to potentially re-evaluating the current restrictions and warnings for a “possible early opening”.
