Senior United Airlines executives go after internal investigation.
United Airlines has just announced the departure of Jeff Smisek, who is no longer the airline’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. Also leaving the carrier are UA executive vice president of communications and government affairs, Nene Foxhall, and senior vice president of corporate and government affairs, Mark R. Anderson.
The departures are in connection with a previously announced internal probe, related to a government investigation into ties with former Port Authority of New York & New Jersey chairman David Samson, who has been under a cloud over possible conflicts of interest at the agency.
US officials have been looking at a United route between Newark, New Jersey and Columbia, South Carolina which is close to where Samson’s wife has a home. According to Bloomberg United ceased operating the route a few days after Samson left the Port Authority last year. United confirmed that the investigations are ongoing and the company continues to cooperate with the government.
“The company’s internal investigation and the related circumstances to not raise any accounting or financial reporting concerns,” a UA statement said.
United Airlines has appointed Oscar Munoz as its new president and ceom while Henry L. Meyer III will become non-executive chairman of the board.
