The Aussie carrier has added six of the new-generation aircraft to its existing order, bringing its total number up to 14.
The latest addition to VA’s fleet is set to arrive from the US at the airline’s home base in Brisbane this afternoon, while the 11 remaining MAX-8 planes are set to arrive throughout 2024.
As well as being 40% quieter, the new aircraft will reduce carbon emissions by at least 15% compared to older generation 737s, bringing the airline closer to its 2030 ambition of reducing emissions by 22%.
VA’s existing order of 25 x MAX-10s, with an expected delivery from late 2025, remains in place.
The carrier has also confirmed a major fitout of its existing 737s will begin in the coming days, with the $110 million interior refresh to include new Business class seats, new or refreshed Economy seats, and the installation of in-seat power across both cabin classes over the next 18-24 months.
VA Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer Alistair Hartley said the investment will enable the carrier to “meet our customers’ needs while positioning the business for success in the long-term”.
