Virgin Australia responds to carbon pricing schemes.
Virgin Australia has just announced it will implement surcharges of up to $6.00 per sector in response to carbon pricing schemes in Australia and Europe.
Domestically, the carrier said it would impose carbon surcharges from 01 Mar, for bookings on/after 01 Jul 2012, at the rate of $1.50 for distances of 1-900kms, $3.00 for distances of 901-2000kms, and $6.00 for distances of 2,000kms or greater.
Virgin Australia will also apply a surcharge of $3.00 per passenger to cover the cost of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, for all flight into and out of Europe, operated by alliance partner Etihad Airways – being Athens, Brussels, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, London, Manchester, Munich and Paris – effective 01 Mar 2012.
MEANWHILE, The International Air Services Commission has today also confirmed an application to transfer the 8560 seats of capacity currently held by Virgin Australia on the Indonesia route to the newly created Virgin Australia International Airlines.
